Gaiters to face 4th in a row nationally ranked opponent

Lennoxville, Sept. 29, 2005 - A week after dropping their annual homecoming game to the 8th ranked Concordia Stingers by a score of 31-17, the Bishop’s Gaiters (0-4) will continue their quest for their first win of the season this Saturday when they head west to face the nationally 5th ranked Université de Montreal Carabins (3-1).

It will be the fourth time this season Gaiters will face a nationally ranked opponent. The Carabins, whose only loss of the season came in Week One against #1 ranked Laval, are fresh off a 31- 24 victory over the Acadia Axemen. This weekend’s match-up will be the first and only meeting between Bishop’s and Montreal this year, baring a postseason meeting between the two squads.

Leading the Bishop’s attack once again this weekend will be a pair of 18 year old freshman sensations in quarterback Joel Lefebvre (Kingston, Ont.) and running back Jamall Lee (Port Coquitlam, B.C.)

Last week, Lefebvre completed 18 of 34 passes for 222 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. For his part, Lee gained Gaiter Athlete of the Week recognition for his 125 yard, two touchdown performance against the Stingers on Saturday. Lee is currently ranked fourth in the QUFL in rushing yards and figures to play a prominent role in the Gaiters’ game plan yet again this weekend.

Among the many notable Montreal players to watch out for this weekend, particular attention should be paid to running back Joseph Mroué who last week rushed for 264 yards on 31 carries. Montreal currently has both the 3rd ranked offense and the 2nd ranked defense in the QUFL.

“He is a difficult back to prepare for,” Gaiters defensive back Dan McCullough said at the weekly Touchdown Club at the Old Lennoxville Golf Course. “He is a great athlete but he is also very small (5’6”) and it is hard to see me when he is the backfield because Montreal has a big offensive line. Once he gets an opening he is gone.”

The game between Bishop’s and Montreal is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. this Saturday and will be played in Montreal.
