2005 Bishop’s Gaiters Football Preview

Lennoxville, Sept. 1st, 2005 - On Monday, Sept. 5th, the Bishop’s Gaiters will host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in their season opener at 1 p.m., at Coulter Field in Lennoxville. This game marks the return of a regional rivalry that is all about pride, bragging rights and an opportunity to get into the win column.

The series, since it resumed in 2003, is tied at 2-2 and from all accounts both teams are ready to come out of the gates with full intensity to battle each other. The Quebec University Football League is arguably the toughest conference in the country and every game is an important statement – this one being no exception.

2004 Highlights

At times the Gaiters played outstanding football in 2004 holding the back to back National Champion Laval Rouge et Or to 15 points and beating the Mount Allison Mounties 25-13 in the annual Homecoming game.

19-year-old quarterback Kyle Williams becomes the first Gaiter to claim the Peter Gorman Trophy as rookie of the year. Just one year out of Waterdown High School the 6-foot-2, 204-pound pivot from Waterdown, Ont. earned the Gaiters’ number-one spot during the training camp and promptly justified the decision by head coach Tony Addona in Bishop’s season opener against Sherbrooke.

In his opening offensive drive Williams took the team 69 yards for a field goal, with the key play being a 35-yard pass to David Delaby. Williams, whose brother Drew, a receiver, is also on the Gaiters roster, finished the season with 71 completions in 159 attempts for 1020 yards, three touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He was chosen Bishop’s offensive player of the year.

The Gaiters will also be counting on four members of team (David Delaby, Mathieu Cock's-Morrisette, Matt Chown and Dan McCullough) who participated in the third annual CIS East-West Bowl game this past summer in Waterloo, Ont.

2005 Outlook

The Gaiters have successfully attracted several of the nation’s top recruits to Bishop's University for the 2005 season. Coach Leroy Blugh promises that the squad will be categorized by exciting, aggressive and tenacious play.

First year linebackers James Yurichuk (6’4” 225- St. Thomas Aquinas- Burlington, Ont.), Kyle Jones (6’0” 185- Woodlands Secondary School) and Ben Haskins(6’2” 215- Smiths Falls Collegiate, Smiths Falls, Ont.) are impact players who along with veteran Defensive Linemen 3rd yr. Matt Chown- 6’3” 275, 3rd yr. Dan McCullough 6’3” 22 and 2nd yr. Charles Burke- 6’4” 225, improve an already good defensive front seven. With the addition of St. Mary’s University transfer corner Marcus Noel to the secondary, the 2005 Gaiter Defense will be exciting to watch.

New additions to the lineup and a trimmed down playbook will make it difficult to stop the 2005 Gaiter Offense led by CIS Rookie of the Year Quarterback Kyle Williams. The return of 4th yr. wide receivers David Delaby-6’0” 185, 2nd yr. standout Keith Godding- 6’0” 190, and the emergence of sophomores Cam McKellar 6’0” 185, Steve Kolada 6’2” 190 and Drew Williams 6’0” 190 will help Guelph University transfer Quarterback Joel Lefebvre- 6’3” 198, adjust to the new Gaiter Offense.

Gaiter Offensive Linemen 2nd yr. Steve Mabee-6’2” 285, two 4th yr. vets Mathieu Cock's-Morissette 6’5” 320, and Francis Brunelle 5’11 265 will anchor an unheralded group who have all been battle tested. The Gaiters will also be counting on sophomores Tyler Skelding 6’5” 255 and Justin Bailey 6’4” 280 to step up their level of play to replace the gaps vacated by Geoff Snow and JF Roy, now with the CFL’s Ottawa Renegades.
