Football season comes to a close against Sherbrooke
Gaiters lose final game of season, look ahead to next year

Oct. 29, 2005 - The Bishop’s Gaiters 2005 season came to a close on a chilly Saturday evening under the bright lights of Sherbrooke University Stadium, with the Gaiters falling 28-10 to their cross-town rivals, the Sherbrooke Vert et Or, dropping Bishop’s record to 1-7 on the season.

The game began with the Vert et Or fumbling on each of their first three possessions but the Gaiters were unable to capitalize on Sherbrooke’s miscues, and the first quarter ended with the two teams tied 0-0.

Sherbrooke’s offense quickly found its rhythm, however, with quarterback Marc-Andre Tougas connecting on two touchdown passes early in the 2nd quarter to give the Vert et Or a 14-0 lead. A 68 yard fumble- return for a touchdown by Gaiter rookie linebacker Kyle Jones cut Sherbrooke’s lead in half but a three yard touchdown run by Sherbrooke running back Diego Ratelle with under thirty seconds to play in the half made the score 21-7 for the Vert et Or heading into the half.

Following a scoreless third quarter, the Gaiters were able to cut Sherbrooke’s lead to 21-10 thanks to a field goal by Kyle Jones early in the fourth. Bishop’s was unable to narrow this gap, however and a late touchdown run by the Vert et Or with thirty seconds to play left the final score at 28-10.

Rookie sensation Jamall Lee once again led the Gaiters offensive attack carrying the ball 23 times for 123yards. On the defensive side of the ball it was another rookie sensation, linebacker Kyle Jones, that led the way for the Gaiters recoding 3.5 tackles and returning a Sherbrooke fumble for the Gaiters only touchdown of the night. For the Vert et Or it was quarterback Marc Andre Tougas leading the way with 180 yards passing, two touchdown passes and a touchdown run.

Sherbrooke’s win left their record on the season at 4-4. The Vert et Or will be in action next weekend when they travel to St. Foy to take on defending Vanier Cup champions Laval Rouge et Or.
