Gaiters eliminated from post-season
Turnovers and penalties prove costly as Bishop’s comes up short against Acadia

Oct. 22, 2005 - In their final home game of the 2005 season, the Bishop’s Gaiters scored nine fourth-quarter points to bring them within a touchdown of the visiting Acadia Axemen, but it was a case of too little too late as Acadia ultimately triumphed 26-19.

The loss brought Bishop’s record to 1-6 on the season and officially eliminated the Gaiters from the playoffs. The Gaiters put in a solid effort against the Axemen (4-3) but were hampered by costly penalties, turnovers and mental errors. “We have to play smarter football,” admitted head coach Leroy Blugh who nonetheless added that he was pleased with the way his team played “We played a good game and we did a good job of coming back and making it close.”

Acadia opened the scoring early in the first quarter after three straight holding penalties pinned the Gaiters deep in their own territory and the Gaiters were forcd to concede a safety.

Acadia increased their lead to 9-0 on the very next play when Eric Neilsen returned a Gaiter kick-off 94 yards for a touchdown return. The Gaiters rebounded on their next drive, however, when Joel Lefebvre connected on a 45 yard touchdown pass to Javier Rivera to cut Acadia’s lead to 9-7. A 29 yard field goal by Kyle Jones gave the Gaiter a brief 10-9 lead but a 75 yard Acadia touchdown pass late in the first quarter gave the Axemen the lead for good.

Acadia managed to increase their lead in the second quarter after capitalizing on two crucial Gaiter turnovers. Acadia quarterback Chris Judd connected on an 8 yard touchdown pass to Matt Carter following an interception by Steve Faora and Gair MacInnis added a field goal following an interception by Prince Mwenga to give Acadia a 26-10 lead heading into halftime.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Bishop’s managed to cut Acadia’s lead to 26-12 following an Acadia safety. A 20 yard touchdown pass from rookie Dusty White, who was subbing in for the incumbent Joel Lefebvre, to David Delaby with just under three minutes remaining brought the Gaiters within seven, but it wasn’t enough as the Gaiters comeback bid ultimately fell short.

Cole Ghering (4.5 tacles, one interception) was named the Defensive player of the game for Bishop’s while Javier Rivera (3 receptions, 87 yards, 1 TD) was awarded Offensive Player of the Game. For the Axemen, quarterback Chris Judd went 18 for 32 for 218 yards and 2 TD’s to lead his team to victory.

Bishop’s season will come to a close next week-end when they visit cross-town rivals Sherbrooke (3-4) at 7:00 p.m while Acadia will host St. FX (5-2).
