Jamall Lee and the Gaiters Eliminate McGill from Postseason
Rookie Sensation rushes for 222 yards
to give Gaiters first win of the season
Lennoxville, Oct.
15, 2005 - The Bishop’s Gaiters (1-5) kept their playoff hopes alive
this Saturday, registering their first win of the season by a score of
27- 4 over the McGill Redmen. The victory marked the first win for Leroy
Blugh as Head Coach of the Gaiters and also eliminated McGill (1-5) from
postseason play.
Freshman sensation Jamall Lee (Port Coquitlam, BC) was instrumental in
leading the Gaiters to victory, rushing for 222 yards and two touchdowns
in a dominating effort. A 61 yard touchdown run by Lee on the last play
of the first quarter broke open the scoring to give the Gaiters a 7-0
lead and set the tone for an impressive afternoon by the rookie running
back.
Bishop’s
remained ahead 7-0 until midway through the second quarter when they
conceded a safety to McGill to make the score 7-2 heading into halftime.
Lee added another touchdown in the third quarter and Gaiter
wide-receiver David Delaby (Frampton, QC) converted a five yard hitch
pass into an 80 yard catch and run touchdown to make the score 20-2
heading into the fourth quarter. Bishop’s conceded another safety early
in the fourth quarter to cut their lead to 20-4 but an 85 yard
interception return for a touchdown by first year linebacker Kyle Jones
(Mississauga, ON) put Bishop’s ahead 27-4.
Once again the Gaiters defense was outstanding, as they sacked Redmen
quarterback Matt Connell seven times and intercepted him three times to
hold McGill’s normally high- powered ofense scoreless. One of the key
leaders for the Gaiters defense was third year defensive back Kevin
Mailloux (St.Basile de Portneuf, QC) who had this to say about his
team’s effort: “It was a great team effort and the final score shows
that we’ve come along way.We knew we were a good team and today it
definitely showed.”
Despite the wet and rainy weather, the Gaiter players couldn’t help but
finish the game by giving their head coach a ‘Gatorade Shower’ to
commemorate his first win as a head coach in the CIS. The win marked
Bishop’s first win against the Redmen since 2001, and their first at
home against the Redmen since 1998.
For the Redmen, Quarterback Matt Connell converted 25 of 42 passes for
258 yards and three interceptions, while running back Pardeep Beesla ran
for 91 yards on 19 attempts.
Bishop’s will be in action again next Saturday when they host the Acadia
Axemen (3-3) at 1:00 at Coulter Field while McGill will play host to the
Laval Rouge et Or.
