Concordia downs Gaiters 23-11
Bishop’s shutout Stingers 11-0 in second half

Montreal, Sept. 10, 2005 - At Montreal, 23 first-half points was all the tenth-ranked Concordia Stingers needed as they went on to defeat the Bishop’s Gaiters 23-11 in front of 4,252 homecoming fans at Concordia Stadium.

Second-year halfback Sammy Okpro paced a strong defensive effort with seven tackles for the Stingers, who held Bishop’s to minus four yards on the ground.

''It's never as good as its seems and it's never as bad as its seems,'' head coach Leroy Blugh said Monday morning. ''We did improve with week before and it's a good thing. I have to realize that we have young players on the field. They have a lot of good things on the tape.''

Linebacker Pat Donovan added 8.5 tackles and one interception for Concordia while Bishop's safety's Bentley Cross finished with 7.5 tackles and his teammate Kyle Jones 6.0 tackles.

Jones punted 13 times for an excellent average of 36.5 yards per kick. After two games, the Mississauga, ON rookie is ranked 2nd in the Quebec conference with an average of 36.5 yards per kick.

Bishop’s made it 23-4 on a pair of safeties and scored its lone touchdown of the afternoon with 1:18 left in the contest when Joel Lefebvre found Cam McKellar 18 yards down the field.

Lefebvre, playing for injured starter Kyle Williams, was 22-of-38 for 219 yards and two interceptions. After two games, Lefebvre leads the Quebec conference with an average of 254 yards per game and 3 touchdown passes. The 18-year-old quarterback from Kingston, ON completed 45 of his 77 passes this year.

For Concordia, quarterback Scott Syvret led the way on offence with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Syvret completed 18 of 27 passes for 135 yards, connecting seven times with Dan Mott for 109 yards.

Gaiters (0-2) will travel to Quebec City next Sunday when they visit the Vanier Cup champion Laval Rouge et Or (2-0).
