Sherbrooke defeats Gaiters in season opener

Lennoxville, Sept. 5, 2005 - Leroy Blugh’s debut as head coach of the Bishop’s Gaiters football team were soundly defeated by their cross-town rival Sherbrooke Vert & Or 38-19 before a capacity crowd of over 4,000 fans, the largest crowd in a decade at Coulter Field for a university football game.

The loss could be costly for Bishop’s which lost 2004 CIS rookie of the year, quarterback Kyle Williams to a head injury late in the first quarter. Williams was 2-of-5 for 15 yards before leaving the field with his team trailing 7-3.

After Bishop’s took a 3-0 lead on a 14-yard field goal by Klye Williams the Vert & Or quickly took control of the game, thanks to two big plays. The first was a 47-yard touchdown pass from Marc-Andre Tougas to former Champlain Cougar Samuel Giguere that gave Sherbrooke a 7-3 lead. After Sherbrooke increased its lead on a conceded safety and a 20-yard rouge on a missed field goal, Tougas once again worked his magic. Rolling to his left the third-year signal caller shoveled a pass to Andre Dorval who then raced 69 yards to paydirt, breaking several tackles along the way.

The Vert & Or continued to roll scoring on their first possession on the second half. Diego Ratelle capped off a six–play, 48-yard drive with a one-yard run.

The Gaiters responded with a 17-yard field goal but Sherbrooke came back with another long drive of 13 plays with Anthony Morris, another former Cougar, scoring on a three-yard run to give the Vert & Or a comfortable 31-6.

To their credit the Gaiters refused to quit and behind back-up quarterback Joel Lefebvre they marched down the field for two majors in the final 19 minutes. Lefebvre played well in relief connecting on 23 of 39 passes for 289 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Lefebvre tossed a seven-yard TD pass to David Delaby and a four-yard strike to Steve Kolada. Bishop’s had another drive stopped when linebacker Pierre-Luc Labbe intercepted a pass in the flat and returned it 61 yards for Sherbrooke’s final touchdown.

Labbe finished the game with seven tackles including two for a loss of ten yards.

At the offensive end Tougas completed 14 of 26 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns while Ratelle rushed for 109 yards on nine carries.

The Vert & Or amassed 443 total yards, including 166 on the ground, while holding Bishop’s to 270 yards.

Bishop’s (0-1) is at Concordia (1-0) this Saturday while Sherbrooke the No. 5 Montreal Carabins (0-1).
