Lady Gaiters weekend recap

Lennoxville, Oct. 6, 2004 - The women’s soccer team travelled to Concordia on Friday to face the Stingers. Whether it was adjusting to the larger artificial surface of Concordia’s field or just the inexperience of having only 3 returning starters from last year, the BU team came out flat and lifeless and were hemmed into their end of the field for most of the first half.

Despite the heavy pressure the team held on until late in the half before conceding a goal from one of the many Concordia corners. After the break the BU team came out much more determined and finally showed signs of life. Early pressure from the ladies almost resulted in a goal when a well-taken free kick by Cara Blainey was turned onto the crossbar by the Concordia goalie. With the BU team finally looking like they had come to play an equalizer looked possible.

However, an uncharacteristic mistake by the BU goalie resulted in a second goal that visibly deflated the team and seemed to kill off the game. With Concordia now sitting back and defending a late comeback was unlikely and the BU girls were left to think on a game that they new they should have done better in.

Sunday saw the BU team face a University of Montreal team fresh from a win over the new number one ranked McGill. Back on their home field the BU ladies played with much more confidence than the previous Friday and although U of M shaded the possession in the first half the BU girls were competitive throughout.

However, while the BU ladies failed to capitalize on their chances the U of M team did not make the same mistake, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime. The BU ladies came out hard in the second half but a serious injury to standout defender Stacy Holder forced the team to reorganize and they never seemed to recover. U of M looked the more dangerous for the change and soon increased their lead with a well-taken goal from just inside the box.

Now 0-3 down the BU ladies continued to work hard but could never seem to find any rhythm or consistency and shortly before the final whistle the BU team conceded another goal ending the day 0-4.
