Soccer:
Lady Gaiters gain their first victory
Lennoxville, Sept.
27th, 2004
-
After a tough first week of the season against top five ranked Laval and McGill, the Lady Gaiter’s Soccer Team faced two important games against Sherbrooke and UQAM.
Friday evening saw the ladies line up against their cross-town rivals in a typically bad-tempered affair. The ladies played well in the first half, stringing together some nice passes but found themselves one nil down midway through the first-half on a fluke goal that ran against the flow of play. The ladies responded well however with two quick goals of their own.
The first came from second year education student Nancy Moriero, while the second came after Katie Michaud, also in education, pounced on a loose ball in the 18 yard box and fired home from close range.
The Gaiters took a well-deserved 2-1 lead into halftime with what looked like the promise of more gaols to follow in the second half. More goals were to materialise but unfortunately for the Gaiters they came at the wrong end. The Sherbrooke team came out hungry and an overly confident BU team was caught off guard.
In what can only be described as a complete meltdown of confidence the ladies conceded 3 unanswered goals in 15 minutes. Although the ladies eventually turned things around and started to again look competitive, the damage was done and the game finished a disappointing 2-4 loss.
Sunday dawned bright and sunny and the BU team came out eager to redress the loss to Sherbrooke. Early in the game the ladies set a fast flowing tempo that led to several good chances including a beautifully taken shot by business major Taya Painter.
But whenever BU threatened the experienced UQAM keeper was there to deny them. At the other end, UQAM had few real chances but whenever they did threaten rookie goalie Josianne Jette was equal to the task. So it was that the two teams went into halftime 0-0. With the second half collapse of Friday still fresh in their minds the BU ladies came out determined to prove themselves as more than just a one half team.
They immediately took the game to UQAM with some great passing. However BU’s failure to turn possession into goals started to look like it might come back to haunt them until second year student Cara Blainey found herself alone in the 18 yard box and calmly tucked away her first goal of the season. With the nerves of the first goal out of the way the ladies poured it on resulting in a second almost identical goal for Cara Blainey.
However just as it looked like UQAM were down and out, a well taken shot heading for the top corner was well saved by BU goalie Jette only to be put away in the resulting scramble. With the score 2-1, time running out, and smelling a possible late come back the UQAM team picked up their work rate and started to show renewed life as they pressed for an equaliser. However unlike Friday the BU team hung tough under the pressure and rarely looked like conceding what would have been an unfair equaliser. With the final whistle the ladies took a well deserved three points and maybe a little bit of self-belief.
Next week the BU women face two more important games away at Concordia on Friday and home to U of Montreal on Sunday.
