Lady Gaiters finished well at the Montreal Irish Invitational Rugby Tournament

Lennoxville, Sept. 6th, 2004 - On Saturday, Sept.4th, twenty-two players, two coaches, and two walking wounded representing the Bishop’s University Lady Gaiter Rugby Football Club traveled to Ste.Julie, Quebec (southeast of Montreal) to play in the Montreal Irish Invitational Rugby Tournament for the third year in a row.

On the women’s side, it is generally the closing event of the club season as the league playoffs had ended the week before. The Lady Gaiters had survived two-a-days all week and the players, with experience varying from one week to seven years, had a chance to get some real games in before the league season kicks off.

The day opened against the host Irish team whose experience clearly shone through. Taking advantage of a team just getting their feet wet together, they consistently got the ball to space and put themselves in positions of outnumbering the Lady Gaiters which resulted in scores and the final outcome was 44-0.

The second game was against Detroit RFC which looked to be the best side at the tourney. They picked up where the Irish had left off and shoddy Gaiter tackling resulted in five first half tries and a score of 29-0 at the half. However, the women played a stronger second half giving up only three tries to lose 44-0.

The Lady Gaiters saved their poorest performance of the day for the side from Quebec City which had endured equally painful losses to the two preceding teams. However, they dominated throughout and won handily 29-0 with Bishops showing little improvement after taking some strides forward in their previous matches.

The Lady Gaiters saved their best for the last finally playing a team in a similar situation to themselves… league rivals Concordia. A fired up team received the opening kickoff, set up a ruck, displayed good ball handling across the field, and scored when 2nd year wing Stephanie Titman’s support of the ball runner paid off when she bobbled the pass, held on, and dove into the end zone for her first try ever.

The ladies continued their pressure and league all star inside center Becca King broke the Concordia defense and went for a thirty meter run which highlighted her excellent speed to score the second try of the match. Cowansville native Stephanie Campbell kicked the convert to give the Lady Gaiters a 12-0 lead.

The Stingers would get one back as they scored off a deep lineout when they “mauled” the ball in for an unconverted score.  However, the Gaiters were resilient in their defense making numerous tackles in the backfield and dominating play. They were on the doorstep to another try when the final whistle blew giving them their first victory over the Stingers in at least two years.

The Ladies will regroup this week and prepare to return to Montreal on Sunday to open their league season. Final 12-5.
