The Provincial finals for the university Alpine skiing circuit take place this weekend
Bishop’s own
Jen Bertram will try to capture the women’s individual title Lennoxville,
Mar. 16, 2005 - The Bishop’s University ski team will travel to Mount Garceau in Lanaudière this up coming weekend to participate in the provincial finals of slalom and giant slalom alpine skiing. This is the last stage of the university Alpine ski circuit this season.
Jennifer Bertram (Vancouver, C B.) currently sits in third place overall but still has a shot at winning the gold. The Bishop's skier will have to perform very well in her two
races this weekend in order to have any chance of winning the female individual championship. With 804 points, Bertram is 111 points behind Kaylyn Morton of McGill and trails second place Alyson Bobby, also of McGill, by 81 points.
It is necessary for Bertram to perform well in the Slalom if she wants any chance of winning a gold medal. So far this season, Bertram was only able to take two 8th place finishes and one 13th place finish. Her accomplishments in the giant slalom are far better as she has won two gold medals and two bronzes.
Katie Bruce (Dartmouth, NS) and Alicia Wood (Aurora, ON) will be also be under close watch in this final event. The two young Bishop’s rookies are placed 15e and 16th respectively and have a great opportunity to move up in the standings. Bruce, who has obtained a fourth place finish in both the slalom and giant slalom this season, has accumulated points in three races this season out of a possible eight. As for Wood, she has marked points in four slaloms but was unable to complete a course in the giant slalom.
As for the men’s skiers of the University of Bishop’s, rookie Jeremy Mawson (Toronto,
ON) as well as veterans Robert MacKay (Toronto, ON.) and Bentley Cross (Halifax,
NS) will want, without any doubt, to improve their overall rankings. The three men are currently sitting in 44th, 41st and 59th.
*****************************
Just like the women, there is a heated fight for the men’s title. Kevin Kelly of Laval has 985 points while Joelyn Boily of the University de Montreal has 975. This final weekend will be a very important one for both racers.
The University of Montreal is comfortably sitting at the top of the field and will most likely capture the men’s title for the 6th year in a row. Montreal is also on pace to collect the combined title as well. On the women’s side, McGill has almost ensured themselves a championship for the sixth consecutive year.
