The 33rd season of Quebec University Alpine Skiing is getting underway
Lady Gaiter Jennifer Bertram’s objective this season is to be the top female skier in Quebec

Montreal, Jan. 13, 2005 – The University Bishop' s Alpine skiing team will be taking part in the first event of the 33rd season of the Quebec University Alpine skiing circuit. This weekend’s event will include two giant slaloms and will be held at St François ski resort in the beautiful area of Charlevoix this upcoming Saturday and Sunday.

In her first season last year, Jennifer Bertram (Whistler, C-B.) was third place in the female individual category despite being absent from competition one weekend last season. The Whistler native won five of the ten races last season, including four in giant slaloms, and one more in slalom. She also had a second place finish and twice more finished in the top ten.

Despite the departure of three veterans (Michou Beaulieu 7th, Sophie Cross 12th and James Morrison 7th) from last years squad the Gaiters will be able to count on the return of Bertram, Robert MacKay (Toronto, Ont.) 18th in 2004 and Melanie Lessard (21st in 2004, 13th in 2003).

The Gaiters are welcoming new recruits Alicia Wood (Toronto, Ont.), Jeremy Hill and Jeremy Mawson (Toronto, Ont.) to the team this year. Coach Katie Bruce believes that it is necessary for the new recruits to have strong seasons in order for the Gaiters to do well.

Bishop' s Alpine team will once again be counting on return of football player Bentley Cross (Halifax, NS.). Cross finished 58th on the men’s side in 2004 out of a total of 105 competitors. The defensive back turned skier started a few games for the Gaiters in the fall as well as playing a variety of Special teams. Cross is aiming to finish among the top 20 this winter, and hopes to compete in more races as he only participated in three of the five weekends last year. He is a Giant Slalom Specialist and his best performance of 2004 was an 18th place finish.

The University de Montreal were last year’s champs and are once again hot favourites to repeat again this year. U de M has captured both the men’s and overall championships in each of the past five seasons. On the Women’s side the Martlets of McGill are once again the favourites coming off their fifth straight title last year.

The last time a school other then McGill or Montreal won a banner for Alpine Skiing was in 1999. The Bishop’s Gaiters captured both the men’s and women’s banners as well as the overall championship in both 1998 and 1999.

Since 1989 only three schools were able two sweep all three awards in Alpine skiing. Bishop’s (1998 & 1999), Montreal (1996) and Concordia (1989).
