Seven Bishop’s players selected for elite rugby game againts Canadian national U-23 team

Montreal, April 20, 2005 - Seven members of the Bishop’s Gaiters have been selected to play for the Quebec university selects in an elite rugby match against the Canadian national under-23 men's team. The contest is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on April 20 at Concordia Stadium in Montreal.

Adam Barrette (Prop), Matt Gagnon (Full Back), Nicolas Gauthier (# 8), Shea McEachrane-Johnson (Hooker), Eric Sanderson (Wing), Rob Scruton (Lock) and Matt Taylor (Prop) will represent Bishop’s.

Sean McCaffrey, the McGill Redmen Head Coach, will guide the university side, which also includes ten players from the McGill Redmen and five from the Concordia Stingers. Graeme McGravie, head coach at Concordia and Charles Goode, an assistant at Bishop’s, round out the coaching staff.

The national under-23 team, which is based in Victoria and goes by the name Pacific Pride, is travelling to Eastern Canada for two weeks of matches and clinics in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. A couple of Pride players will be familiar to the local rugby community -- winger Scott Gill, a former Stinger and native of Beaconsfield, Que., plus Bishop's Matt Phinney, a flanker from Toronto.

Since its inception in 1996, the National Rugby Centre Pride program has exposed 120 of Canada's top young rugby players to elite standards of competition, coaching, fitness training and personal development in an intensive two-year residential setting. The program is recognized for raising the level of the league and community game in Canada and developing more than 50 players for the national squad and the sevens team.
