lose QSSF Men's Rugby Championship over McGill Montreal, Nov. 7, 2004 - Matt DeGraff and Mark Ihnatowycz scored 15 points apiece as McGill bashed Bishop’s 55-17 to win the 2004 Quebec university men’s rugby championship at Molson Stadium on Sunday. With this victory the Redmem avenged their loss to the Bishop's in last year's finals and collected their second provincial title (QUSF) in the past three years. Although the final score was not close at half time it still appeared to be anyone's game as the Gaiters only trailed 17-10. However the tides turned in the second half and it was a completely different story. McGill seemed to benefit from playing on the synthetic turf of Percival-Molson Stadium and destroyed the Gaiters as a result of their uncontested speed on the fast playing surface. Mathew Gagnon was once again the best player on the Bishop's side as he was responsible for seven of the Gaiters points. It was uncertain Gagnon would play in this match and if he did how effective he could be seeing as how he could barely walk last Friday after seriously injuring his knee. Gagnon refused to sit this game out and with his knee feeling at around 80% he decided to suit up. 'This was a rebuilding year for our team and we were not always as disciplined as we could have been,” commented BU coach Bill Robson following the loss. 'McGill was highly motivated for this game and as it went on it continued to show as they kept playing better and better”. Shea McEachrane-Johnson (Toronto, ON), Rob Scruton (Mississauga, ON) and Brogan Taylor (Markham, ON) were awarded to the QSSF All-star team. About 100 fans from Bishop's went to Montreal to show their school colors and support their beloved Gaiters. “Rugby is always an exciting came to watch especially when it is a match between Bishop's and McGill. We came here in hopes of watching the Gaiters win there second strait title but unfortunately they were unsuccessful. Never the less I am still proud of the effort our team put forth this season” added a Gaiter supporter immediately after the match. |
