Leroy Blugh named Head Football Coach of the Bishop’s Gaiters

Lennoxville, April 13, 2005 - Nearly twenty years after arriving in Lennoxville as a recruit for the Bishop's Gaiters, Leroy Blugh has come full circle when he was named Head Football Coach Wednesday taking over the reins from Tony Addona.

"I consider this an incredible honour after having first started as a student here and realizing a dream that I am the Head Coach of this tradition-rich program," stated Blugh who served this year as the Special Team's Co-ordinator for the Gaiters.

"This is definfitely going to challenging to go through the ups and downs of putting this program back on the winning track but this is exactly what I plan to do."

Tony Addona, Director of Athletics at Bishop's and the outgoing Head Coach, will remain as Offensive Co-ordinator of the team. "I am extremely pleased that Leroy will take over the Head Coach responsibilities," said Addona.

"Leroy not only possesses great knowledge of the game, he has the ability to bring people together and has great people skills. Everyone in the Bishop's Football family can be proud that Leroy will now lead our team."

Last season was a difficult one for a young Gaiter team. However, Gaiter football hopes are optimistic especially with having the 2004 CIS Rookie of the Year Kyle Williams as their quarterback and the expectation of a fine recruiting year for 2005.

"We have talent on this team," confided Blugh. "We still, however, have to work hard on the recruiting trail to bring in as many talented football players as we can. Then our our next step is to improve the confidence level of our returning veterans while instilling an attitude to the whole team that reflects a winning atmosphere."

Originally, a native of St. Vincent and Grenadine, Leroy and his family moved to Napanee, Ontario when he was five years old. The thirty eight year old Blugh becomes the sixth head football coach of the Bishop's Gaiters since 1962.

Blugh enjoyed an exceptionally successful career at Bishop's during the late 80's. The former linebacker was chosen to the CIAU All Canadian team on three occasions and capped that off with the President's Trophy in 1988 as the Best Defensive Player in Canada. Blugh was also chosen the Best Defensive Player in the OQIFC three consecutive seasons.

As a result, Leroy was drafted by the Canadian Football League in the first round in 1989 by the Edmonton Eskimos where he enjoyed an eleven year career which included one Grey Cup championship in 1993. In 1996, Leroy won the prestigious Schenley Award given to the league's best Canadian player . All told, Leroy played for fifteen seasons in the CFL, finishing his career with the Toronto Argonauts in 2003.

During his CFL carrer, Leroy was selected to the Western Conference All-Star team on three occassions and was also selected twice as a CFL All Canadian.
