Tony Addona steps down as head coach of the Bishop’s Gaiters football team
Lennoxville native remains as as athletics director as well as the team’s offensive coordinator
Lennoxville,
Mar. 23, 2005 - It is official, Tony Addona will be stepping down as the head coach of the Bishop’s Gaiters Football team.
He succeeded Larry Legault who resigned following the 2003 season. However, it is now time for Addona to do the same and step down from his head coaching duties. He will retain his position as athletics director as well as his offensive coordinating duties for the Bishop’s Football team.
“When I accepted the head coaching duties for the football team I had clearly stated that it would be on an interim basis.” Addona also stated that, “It was becoming difficult for me to find the time to accomplish my duties both on the field and in the office. Especially with all the projects that the athletics department are presently involved in.”
In his only season as the head coach for the Gaiter’s, Addona saw his team finish with a record of 1-7. However there was some positive to come out of the 2004 season, the emergence of players such as quarterback Kyle Williams, who was selected as the country’s top rookie, ensures a positive future for the team.
The head coaching position has been internally posted and will be advertised externally
next week.
“I hope that the next head coach will be able to re-solidify our football program and lead our team to victory. Our school has always had a strong football tradition and we went to re-achieve the respect we once had.” stated Addona.
Before accepting the interim duties for the Gaiter’s, Addona had led the Champlain Cougar’s to eight “Bol d’Or” in 17 seasons at the helm of the team.
While head coach of the Cougar’s, Addona had an impressive record of 125 wins, 47 losses and one tie. He also led his to team to the playoffs 14 times in 17 seasons.
“I hold dear many memorable moments in my career and there are many,” admitted Addona. “I had a lot of pleasure sharing duties with Peter Dalla Riva in Italy, and I also cannot forget when I coached the AAA collegiate all-star team in France and my trips with team Canada.”
He started coaching in 1976 for Laurier MacDonald High School and soon gained a reputation as an outstanding offensive coach.
Addona played quarterback at Springfield College in Massachusetts where he completed his physical education degree in 1976. He then returned to the same institution to work on his Masters Degree and serve as an assistant coach. Upon his return to Quebec, Tony was a member of the Concordia University coaching staff and head coach once again at Laurier MacDonald High School.
In 1984, Tony began his 17-year tenure with the Champlain Cougars and developed a CEGEP dynasty at the Lennoxville school.
