Tony Addona will be travelling with team Canada for the Junior World Championship of Football

Lennoxville, Jan. 27, 2005 - Bishop’s University athletic director and head football coach Tony Addona left for Jacksonville Tuesday morning to coach in the annual under 20 football world Championship. The tournament is an annual event that is being held in conjunction with the Super Bowl.

Coach Addona will be taking part in the prestigious tournament for the first time in his career. He will be the offensive coordinator for the Canadian squad. Danny Maciocia who was recently appointed as the Edmonton Eskimo’s Head Coach will have a similar role with the National under-20 team. The Laval Rouge et Or head coach Glen Constantin was chosen as the defensive coordinator for the tournament.

The head coach and offensive co-ordinator for the Gaiters will bring 28 years of coaching experience to the Canadian team as they head to Jacksonville.

“This will be a wonderful opportunity for me as I will be working side by side with some very proven coaches in Danny Maciocia, Dan Kepley, Carl Brennan and Glen Costantin as well as many others. I will also have the opportunity to coach some of the sports finest young athletes,” stated Addona before he departed.

This will be the first time that Tony has coached in such a prestigious event. He was although the head coach of Team Quebec in 1996.

“We had beaten the French team coached by Marc Santerre back then but this time it will be a much different story because this event is being held as part of the Super Bowl festivities, ” added Addona.

The coaches at this event will benefit not only from the experience but it will also give them the opportunity to evaluate and recruit many of the participating athletes.

“We will have the chance to observe some of the finest football players in all of Canada as they play in a very competitive atmosphere. During the duration of the tournament we will get to know many of these players quite
well.”

Addona will not be the only Lennoxville representative in the tournament as four members of the Champlain Cougars (Guillaume Desmarais, François Daneau, Samuel Giguère and Yannick Sage) will be joining him. Benoit Boulanger of the College of Sherbrooke will also be one of the 39 members who were chosen to represent Canada at the World Under 20 Championship.
