Stingers Win 34-10; Eliminate Gaiters from Playoff Contention

Lennoxville, Oct. 16th, 2004 - The Concordia Stingers took advantage of several Bishop’s miscues in the first half to roll to a 34-10 win that eliminated the Gaiters from playoff contention in the Quebec University Football Conference.

The game itself took a backseat to the plight of Bishop’s quarterback Kyle Williams who was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to CHUS after being knocked unconscious late in the first half. Williams was rolling out to his right and was hit hard by Concordia linebacker Mickey Donovan and he released the ball. He hit the ground hard and play was suspended as both teams went to their respective locker rooms for an early halftime break.

Williams suffered a concussion and was released from the hospital after spending the night in the hospital.

The Gaiter problems began on the opening series where back-to-back penalties wiped out a pass competition of 42 yards and a fumble by Williams forced Bishop’s into a third and 22 situation from their own four-yard line Rather than kick out of their own end zone the Gaiters relinquished a two-point safety.

The Gaiters got one point back.

After the defence held the Stingers in check on their two possessions the Gaiters fumbled the ball on a sweep giving Concordia excellent field position on the Bishop’s 23-yard line. Two plays later Concordia capitalized as Scott Syrvet tossed a touchdown pass to Jun Scott to give the Stingers a 9-1 lead. Concordia added a single on a missed field goal and then the Gaiters’ offensive unit  gift-wrapped another present for the visitors when they fumbled on their own 30-yard line. This time it took Concordia just one play, a 30-yard run by Mark Kang, to score a major for a 17-1 lead.

On the next drive Williams was injured prompting the officials to start the halftime with just under two minutes remaining in the second quarter.

When play was resumed the Stingers add two more points when the Gaiters were forced to concede another safety on a third and long and on the ensuing possession the Stingers put together their best drive of the game when they marched 70 yards in six plays. Syrvet capped off the impressive drive with a one-yard plunge to give Concordia a commanding 26-1 lead.

After another single point for Concordia the Gaiters finally pushed the ball over the goal line in the third quarter when Pat Nadeau engineered a 4-play, 85-yard drive highlighted by an circus catch by David Delaby. Delaby caught the ball between two receivers at the Concordia 20-yard line and the fought his way to the two-yard line. From there Jon Armstrong ran for the major that cut the Stinger lead to 27-8.

That was as close as Bishop’s would get. Mike Renaud hauled in a 5-yard scoring strike from Syrvet for Concordia’s final points while the Gaiters recorded a safety late in the game to round out their scoring.

Williams was 10-22 for 105 yards before being injured while Pat Nadeau completed 9 of 15 for 196 yards. Delaby was the game’s top receiver with 10 catches for 190 yards.
