Football Saskatchewan's Bilan, Bishop's Lavoie named CFL/CIS players of
the week
Ottawa, Sept. 28th, 2004 -
Quarterback Steve Bilan, of the No. 4 University of Saskatchewan Huskies,
and defensive back Jerome Lavoie, of the Bishop's University Gaiters, are
this weeks CFL/CIS offensive and defensive player of the week.
Lavoie, a second-year Arts and Science student from Beauceville, Que. tied
a Quebec conference single-game record with three interceptions in
Bishop's (1-3) 25-13 win over the Mount Allison University Mounties (0-3).
Bilan, a fourth-year Kinesiology student from Saskatoon threw five touchdown
passes as he completed 20 of 32 attempts for 347 yards to lead Saskatchewan
(3-0) to a 47-14 win over the University of Manitoba Bisons (1-3).

Bishop's University Gaiters
Lavoie, a 22-year-old defensive back from Beauceville, Quebec tied a Quebec
conference single-game record with three interceptions as the Gaiters pick
up their first win of the season, a 25-13 decision over the Mount Allison
Mounties. His first interception came five minutes into the second quarter
on Bishop's 50-yard line. Lavoie returned it 35 yards to Mount Allison's
25-yard line, setting up a touchdown on the ensuing play.
The 5-foot-11, 182-pound Gaiter also added three solo tackles and broke up
one pass against the Mounties. The second-year Business student leads the
nation with five interceptions in four games.
Lavoie's three interceptions were part of Bishop's eight picks on the day.
Lavoie and Bishop's visit the second-ranked Universite de Montreal Carabins
(4-0) Saturday afternoon.

Steve Bilan, a fourth-year Kinesiology student, threw for 347 yards and five
touchdown passes as the No. 4 Huskies (3-0) defeated the University of
Manitoba Bisons, 47-14. In only three quarters of work, the Saskatoon
native completed 20 of 32 passes for 347 yards and no interceptions. With
his five passing majors, Bilan now sits atop the national stat leaders with
13 on the season.
Highlights of Bilan's performance against the Bisons included a 52-yard
touchdown pass to Edmonton Eskimos draft pick Chad Rempel at the end of the
first quarter, a 20-yard TD strike to Aaron David at the end of the half,
and a 27-yard major to Jeff Schieman in the third frame.
It is the second consecutive week that Bilan was named Canada West offensive
player of the week. The fourth-year veteran built upon his performance last
week, in which he completed 21 of 30 passes for 398 yards and four
touchdowns in the Huskies 31-13 win over Simon Fraser. In past two games,
Bilan has accumulated nine touchdown passes, without throwing an
interception.
The Huskies hope to build on their CIS fourth-ranked 3-1 record when they
host the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (2-1) Saturday, at
Griffiths Stadium.
