Gaiters soccer kicks off season
Women get off to quick start but drop game 5-2 to Laval
September 12, 2003   Bishop's Sports Information

In their first game of the season, against the best team in the conference, the Gaiters women’s soccer team demonstrated that while they are a young team with only a few returning players from last years talented team, they are ready to play against the best in the conference. Friday night on Abbott Field the Lady Gaiters got off to a quick start against the defending conference champion Rouge et Or, with Amanda Dewey-Plante scoring early in the first half. But from there it was all Laval, scoring consecutive goals and coming away with a 5-2 victory.

“This is a new team with a lot of new players,” said team captain Kelly Hodge after the game. “But they are learning. We have a new system and it requires a lot of communication and that’s something that will develop over the course of the season.”

But while the Gaiters may have gone through some growing pains in the season opener, first year coach Arnulf Koegler was happy with the overall performance of the team.

“It was just one of those games, where we had a number of chances,” said Koegler of his new team. “This is a team that is still learning a new system, so we have some minor adjustments that we needed to make. But (Laval) is the best team in the league and I think we are a very good team, we are capable of getting the result when we meet them again.”

Last season it was Shannon Marshall who led the team with 8 goals, good enough for second in the CIS. This year it will be on the strength of Marshall’s foot and her ability to make things happen in the oppositions end that could be the x factor that takes Bishop’s to the next level.

“I would love to repeat last season success, obviously,” said the third year striker. “This year there is a better squad behind me, and when the midfielders and defence can make plays that gives me more opportunities to score.”

The women now play Sunday at the University of Montreal (game time 1:00 p.m.) and hope to rebound from Friday’s loss.

“We will change are line up a little for Sunday,” said Koegler. “It should allow us to open up the game a little more. Overall I am very pleased with how things went tonight.”
