Lady Gaiters take inaugural tournament
Women's Rugby gives thanks by beating opposition
October 14, 2003   Bishop's Sports Information

On Saturday, Oct.11th, the Bishop’s University Lady Gaiter Rugby Football Club hosted an invitational tournament at Optimist Park. Some teams dropped out at the last minute leaving Bishop’s, John Abbott College, and Bentley College from Waltran, Massachusetts to play in this inaugural tournament.

Bentley played John Abbott in the first match with the latter winning 29-0. After a break for lunch, Abbott played Bishop’s. Last year, Abbott had visited Lennoxville and won an exhibition match. They got off top a good start jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Val Dessaulles hit a penalty kick from 22 meters out to close the score to 5-3 which is how it stood at the end of the half. The Lady Gaiters picked up their intensity level and dominated the first part of the second half. An attempted penalty kick was wide but the Abbott player dropped it in the end zone and the ball bounced right onto Becca King’s hands who touched it down for a try. Dessaulles converted the try to make it 10-5. Abbott put on sustained pressure at the end but was not able to score.

Bishop’s then had a short break before taking on Bentley. After a slow start Becca King managed to put the Gaiters in the lead with a wild run which saw her retreat 30 meters for a ball then start a run at around her 22 meter line which meandered the 80 plus meters needed to score a try which made the score 5-0 that stood unchanged at the half. The second half saw flanker Kate Bagshaw score on a 15 meter run off a penalty, prop Karyn Hornblower score her first try of the season after a determined 25 meter run, Mary Jane Court completing a nice ball handling sequence from the backs with a 15 meter scoring run, and wing Jenn Kang scoring the first try of her career in only her second year of playing. The final score was 25-0 which earned the Lady Gaiters the title tournament champions.
