Ski team hits the slopes
Jen Bertram wins two races, leads team to third overall in standings
January 21, 2004  Bishop's Sports Information

Jen Bertram and the Bishop's University ski team are off to a great start to the 2004 University ski circuit. Bertram recently won back-to-back Giant Slalom events at Le Massif.

Bertram set the stage for the weekend on Saturday when she captured the gold with a time of 1:43:36, half a second faster than McGill's Kaylyn Morton.

Bertram continued her outstanding skiing the following day as she duplicated Saturday's gold medal finish, this time in 1:46:98., a second and a half faster than second place finisher Elise Dubois of UQTR.

Team captain Michou Beaulieu had seventh and sixth place finishes in the two-day event, while other notable Gaiters skiers on the women's side included Sophie Cross (11th and ninth) and Melanie Lessard (25th and 23rd).

The men's side didn't produce any medals but did have some strong performances nonetheless.

James Morrison was the top Bishop's male skier on both days, finishing ninth on Saturday (1:40:77) and seventh on Sunday.

Bennett Carter came in 10th Saturday but did not race on Sunday, while Robert MacKay (11th and 15th), Justin Schaldone (19th on Saturday), Reid McGregor (27th and ninth), Steve Maher (25th on Sunday), Bentley Cross (26th on Sunday) and Christopher Clancey (30th and 31st) all turned in respectable performances.

The Gaiters will be back in action next weekend when they compete in the second stage of the University circuit at Le Relais for a slalom event.

On Feb. 7, the circuit moves to Le Massif du Sud for a giant slalom.

The season concludes with a slalom event on the final weekend in February, and then a combined slalom and giant slalom on March 12 and 13 at Mont Sutton.
