Men's Rugby drops ETS
Robson's crew moves into sole possession of first place
September 25, 2003   Bishop's Sports Information

Bishop’s men’s rugby moved one step closer to clinching a home playoff game, remaining undefeated Wednesday night and improving their overall record to 3-0-1 with a 36-3 victory against ETS. And while the game against ETS was one sided, head coach Bill Robson was additionally unimpressed with ETS’ poor sportsmanship, finally resulting in the ETS head coach receiving a write up for enticing his player’s to deliver ‘cheap shots’ behind the referee’s back.

“It really slows the game down when there are so many penalties,” said Robson after the contest. “It was as low key a game as possible, our forwards are really coming together. But they are an undisciplined team who are taking way to many penalties, and they are shooting themselves in the foot.”

“It was really like a hockey game, they were playing a lot like the broad street bullies of the 70’s,” added Robson. “And I am really proud that our boys didn’t retaliate, because at that point a game can really degenerate.”

Andy Wanka led the way for the Gaiters with another solid performance on converts, kicking three and adding one try for a total of 11 points on the match. Andrew Fawcett added two try’s for the Gaiters as they moved in sole possession of first place, a half point ahead of Concordia, who the Gaiters will face this Sunday.

“This game Sunday is really important, it’s imperative that we knock off Concordia this Sunday,” said Robson. “If we can keep out of penalty trouble we should be able to win this game. No one in the conference can beat our team on line-outs.”

The Gaiters A team plays Sunday at 2:00 p.m. on the field beside Abbott residence and the B team will follow. The Killer B’s also play Saturday afternoon in Kingston, taking on Queen’s Law School.
