Men's Rugby celebrates 20 years
Homecoming celebrates Bill Robson's twentieth year
September 13, 2003   Bishop's Sports Information

It was an event twenty years in the making. Twenty years of memories, some printable, some not, but all good, and for Bill Robson it was a culmination of twenty years of blood and sweat, with many more beers than tears along the way.

In fact, over the course of his illustrious 20 year career, Robson has posted one of the most impressive winning records within Rugby or any sport for that matter, consistently keeping the Gaiters men’s rugby team tops in the Quebec conference, winning numerous championships along the way.

This past weekend, 20 years of Bishop’s Rugby team members came together on Optimus Field to celebrate the rugby program’s twentieth anniversary, which thanks to Bill Robson has become the premier university rugby program in the province.

“I was confident that it would last,” said Robson of his creation 20 years ago. “I knew we would be able to get the funding, and finding players would never be a problem, so I never had any doubts that this program when it started.”

And while Saturday Robson got to watch his new players take on the old in an alumni game (which ended in a tie 17-17), it was the memories that the event evoked that truly made the experience worthwhile.

“Some stories are printable, most are not, but they are all definitely great memories,” said Robson. “I think the best part of this event has to be the fact that everyone from this program is doing so well. The rugby players from this school have all had tremendous success after Bishop’s and I’m always pleased to see that.”

Along the way to the event, Robson had comprised a tremendous coaching record, consistently keeping his team at the top of the conference.

“One of my fondest memories has to be when we went 33-0 during a stretch in the early nineties,” says Robson, who doubles as the current Dean of the Business Faculty at the University. “And definitely beating McGill for the first time in 1986 was tremendous, and obviously the championship teams hold a special place in my heart.”
