Bishop's welcomes Leroy Blugh back into the fold
February 24, 2004   Bishop's Sports Information

Lennoxville- Bishop’s University is pleased to announce the hiring of former Bishop’s and CFL football star Leroy Blugh as the new assistant football coach for the Bishop’s University Gaiters. Blugh will work for the Gaiters in the capacity of assistant coach, while working specifically with the defensive line and special teams. He will also help off the field in the capacity of assistant recruitment coordinator and strength and conditioning coach for the team.

“Obviously we are very pleased and excited with having Leroy join the team,” says Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Tony Addona. “Leroy epitomizes all that Bishop’s Football can be. He is a graduate of the program, had an exceptional university career at Bishop’s and as a professional in the CFL and we think that he sets an amazing example to our athletes.”

Blugh’s is arguably the best football player to ever play at Bishop’s University. A three-time All-Canadian during his time at Bishop’s, Blugh was named defensive player of the year for the OQIFC three times and was the President’s Trophy winner for national defensive player of the year in 1988. Blugh was then drafted in the 1989 CFL College Draft by the Edmonton Eskimos, who acquired the pick from the B.C. Lions along with Jim Sandusky for quarterback Matt Dunigan. In 1996 Blugh was a CFL Western All-Star and named the CFL/Chrysler Most Outstanding Canadian in 1996. Blugh retired from professional football in the July of 2003 after a 15 year CFL career.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity, everything is so familiar and it’s such a natural fit to step in here and help the football program,” says Blugh who played for both the Eskimos and the Argonauts during his 15 year career. “What I remember the most about my days at Bishop’s was the camaraderie of the team, at Bishop’s it was a family affair and we took a look of pride in what we did on the field. I want to pass that message on to the current members of the team, and I am looking forward to the upcoming season.”

Blugh starts with the team immediately and with his focus on the upcoming recruiting class and the off-season strength and conditioning program for current Gaiters.
