Addona named head coach of Gaiter Football
Former Champlain Cougar coach to lead Bishop's back to glory
December 20, 2003   Bishop's Sports Information

In a move that is highly endorsed by the entire Bishop's Football community, Bruce Stevenson- the Dean of Students Affairs at Bishop's University, announced today that Tony Addona has been named Head Football Coach of the Bishop's Gaiters. Addona, a forty eight year old native of Montreal, received unanimous support from the selection committee.

"We are very fortunate to have Tony take over the direction of our football team at this time," stated Stevenson. " Not only does Tony possess excellent credentials as a football coach, he also brings instant credibility that can only come from a proven winner."

Addona, who will maintain his duties as Director of Athletics at Bishop's University, welcomes the challenge of his new appointment." Bishop's football has long held a tremendous tradition of excellence on the field ," said Addona." We will work hard to regain our status as a winning team that will once again be a source of pride to the Bishop's football community and our alumni."

Prior to joining the Department of Athletics at Bishop's two years ago, Tony was one of the most successful Head Football Coaches in Canada at Champlain Regional College in Lennoxville. Over the course of a seventeen year career as Head Coach of the Champlain Cougars, Tony amassed an impressive record of 125 wins, 47 losses and 1 tie. Included in this was an incredible eight Bol D'Or championships as well as being a Bol D'Or finalist on three separate occasions.

"More important than the championships and won-loss record, I felt very privileged to be part of the development of many young men at Champlain who went on to fine University careers at CIAU (now CIS) and NCAA schools," stated Addona. " Being able to be part of the success of people like Tom Nutten ( Super Bowl Champion St. Louis Rams), three time Hec Crighton winner Chris Flynn ( St. Mary's), Paul Lambert ( Montreal Alouettes) and Scott Regimbald (Calgary Stampeders) is very rewarding. Now I look forward to taking the next generation of Gaiter football players and helping them achieve their full potential."

Addona assumes his duties immediately with his priorities being recruiting and filling a vacant position on the coaching staff.
