All-Canadian Colon
Gaiters star receiver earns spot on first-team
November 24, 2003   Bishop's Sports Information

Growing up in Annandale, Virginia, Gilles Colon never dreamed of setting foot on a football field. Thursday night however, in downtown Toronto the fifth year Gaiters inside receiver was acknowledge as the best player at his position, being a named a first team All-Canadian on the 2003 team.

“It’s an honour,” said Colon of the award. “I’ve worked hard over my time here at Bishop’s and right now it’s just a tremendous feeling.”

The Gilles Colon story has fast become a part of Gaiter lore, as the Virginia native walked on to the Gaiters squad having never played a down of organized football in his life. But over the course of five years, Colon has turned his outstanding athleticism that he possessed as a high school basketball and soccer star, into one of the most athletic football player’s ever to wear the silver and purple. Now, with his career at Bishop’s over, Colon is setting his sights on the professional ranks and a potential career in the CFL.

“I want to play next year in the CFL,” says Colon. “It’s always been a goal of mine to play professional sports, and I know I can make it.”

Over the weekend Colon was able to take in the festivities at numerous Vanier Cup events, including Test for the Best, a high school evaluation camp, and a visit to the Sick Children’s Hospital. The latter had an affect on the young star.

“The children really responded to all of us (All-Canadian Team),” says Colon. “They were excited and we fed off each others energy. Those kids are the real All-Canadians, they are going through more than any of us will never know, and they are a real inspiration.”
