Gaiters drop final game of the season to Redmen
Team finishes season 2-6, misses playoffs for first time since 1999

It was a must win game for both teams Saturday afternoon in Lennoxville, as both the Bishop’s Gaiters and McGill Redmen needed to win to make the QIFC playoff’s next weekend. From the outset it became apparent that the Redmen wanted it more.

Quarterback Dave Campbell, from Calgary, Alberta, took charge from the opening possession, connection with wide receiver Greg Hetherington on a 76 yard pass on the first play from scrimmage. And while Bishop’s responded with a Sylvain Desrochers 22 yard rushing touchdown, from there McGill pulled away to take a 27 to nine lead into the half.

On the strength of two Kevin Jagger 68 yard punt returns for touchdowns, the game got out of reach as the Gaiters never seemed able to get their offense rolling.
Defensively for the Redmen, defensive end Jason Manzano, a native of Dorval, Quebec, set a new McGill record for sacks in a game with five.

For the Gaiters, quarterback Sylvain Desrochers in his final game at the helm, was 14-21 with two interceptions. The Montreal native had the Gaiters lone touchdown on a 22 yard run and had seven carries for 60 total yards.

”This is tough to end the season like this,” said running back Andre Bynoe after the game. “You never want to go out this way, we wanted to make the playoffs.”

The Redmen now wait to see the winner of tomorrow’s Laval-Montreal contest to see where they will travel for the first round of the playoffs next weekend.
