Player Diary Week 5
Freshmen Tom Cumberbatch on Montreal, the Q and winning
October 9, 2003   Bishop's Sports Information

Tom Cumberbatch joins the Gaiters this season after a stellar High School career at Colonel By High School in Ottawa. Cumberbatch was an AIA All-Star, a two year coach’s choice award winner and a school team spirit award winner. The bruising fullback is one of a talented freshmen class and will be a name to remember in the coming years.

Player Diary

Going into game five against the University of Montreal we were confident. The atmosphere in the locker room was positive and the practice fields resonated with positivity and assurance. We scouted Uof M hard and appropriately, but we could not execute against them. The biggest question for the players and coaches in the post - game analysis was why did they beat us? We, the Bishops Gaiters have the tools needed to have beaten U de M. Our players matched up appropriately and our scheme had the potential to succeed against theirs. The onus is now on the players ALONE!

As a team we concluded that our inability to pay attention to the little details and the basic elements in our scheme was the determining factor in our loss on Saturday afternoon. Coach Legault often stresses the importance of understanding elementary details and executing them regardless of the situation, but it never hit me like it did on Saturday afternoon.

As members of an extremely competitive conference we as a team have to concentrate on winning our next three games. Our practices have to remain at a level of high intensity and we should treat every team like they were the best in the country. We have to be ruthless on the field (within the parameters of the game) and play with our hearts. We now have nothing to lose and everything to gain, therefore we have to allow pride and determination to propel us into the playoffs.

If we, the Bishop's Gaiters place the thought of winning at the highest regard, and allow a sense of urgency to influence our attitudes on and off the field, we WILL find ourselves in the playoffs and we WILL find a way to win.
