Homecoming Horror It had the potential to be a barnburner; a tight 17-10 game at halftime however was extinguished not only by a torrential downpour Saturday afternoon in Lennoxville but a tough hard nosed football clinic put on by the Montreal Carabins, as the team improved their record to 5-0 on the season by beating the Bishop’s 53-22. In front of a sell-out homecoming crowd at Bishop’s Coulter Field, the Carabins demonstrated that to have success in the rain, you need a solid running game. Head coach Jacques Dussault only needed to look down his bench to number 21, Joseph Mroue to provide that running attack. Mroue rushed 17 times for 140 yards on the ground and one touchdown. Gaiters head coach Larry Legault again left the field shaking his head, as his team missed numerous opportunities in the first half and completely fell apart in the second. “We were
brutal today,” said a dejected Legault after the contest. “We just didn’t
come to play, this was a game that we should win, and we just didn’t.” Defensively the Carabins top ranked unit in the country allowed their first touchdown of the year, coming on a quarterback draw play from Sylvain Desrochers. The Carabins were able to force a fumble and sacked Bishop’s quarterback Sylvain Desrochers four times for a loss of 26 yards. “I don’t know what it is exactly that is causing our team to play like this,” said Desrochers, who completed only seven of 18 passes for 68 yards. “I don’t know if it’s just a matter of being able to weather the storm. When the other teams does something, we seem to get down a little bit, and we can’t do that. We have to be able to bounce back in the face of adversity.” The Gaiters now drop to 1-4 on the season and are left wondering what they will have to do to improve for the remainder of the season. While next week’s game appears to be much easier against the Vert & Or, the Gaiters now are in a situation where if they hope to make the playoffs, they will have to win their next three games. “We just played really poorly today,” said halfback Kevin Mailloux. “And I think we really need to respond to this and turn around the rest of the season.” Next week the Gaiters travel across town to Sherbrooke to take on the winless Vert & Or at 7:00 p.m.
