Almost shocking the world
Gaiters have early second quarter lead against number 1 ranked St. Mary's but ultimately drop contest 54-17

There was supposed to be a hurricane coming into Lennoxville Saturday afternoon. It was hurricane Mary as in St-Mary’s and it was supposed to wash away the Gaiters. Much to the surprise of everyone except the Gaiters themselves, that hurricane never materialized and while the final score was 54-17, the game was tight for three of the four quarters, with the Gaiters demonstrating that they came to play with the best team in the country.

“I came in this morning with a bit of an uneasy feeling,” said Huskies head coach Blake Nill after the game. “(Bishop’s) is a team that hasn’t gotten a lot of respect, but watching the tapes this week, this team has a lot of speed, a great quarterback in Desrochers and Colon beat us. Colon is definitely a great weapon to have and he burned us on that one slant.”

And Nill had every right to feel uneasy, as the Gaiters had the lead early in the second quarter and went into the half trailing 19-10. But from there the Huskies demonstrated why they are the number one ranked team in the country, dominating the Gaiters on the strength of two Les Mullings touchdown runs, both coming on draw plays and both over 50 yards each.

For the Gaiters, offensively the day belonged to the two offensive stars of the team, Sylvain Desrochers and Gilles Colon. Desrochers stood in the pocket and took shots from the Huskies All-Canadian front seven, but was able to complete two touchdown passes, one to Colon and one to David Delaby, and was 18-37 with two picks. Colon was his usual elusive self, with seven receptions for 130 yards

“Everyone on this team battled their hearts out in the first half,” said Colon after the game. “But to play the best in the country you have to play a full game, but we can take a lot of things away from this one.”

Colon’s touchdown came on a slant across the middle, but before the play Head Coach Larry Legault picked up on a trend in the St Mary’s defence, called an iso adjustment for Gilles that resulted in man coverage for the speed receiver.

“Larry called that adjustment at the perfect time, most of the half I had been double covered,” said Colon. “But our offensive line did an amazing job, and we learned today that it’s not that we can’t play against these guys, and we will know that for next time.”

The Gaiters are now 1-2 and headed to Laval to play another top ten ranked team in the Rouge et Or. Bishop’s however is coming away from this game with a much needed boost of confidence and will look to player’s like Colon and Desrochers to make the difference against the highly touted Rouge et Or.
