Player Diary 2 Tom Cumberbatch joins the Gaiters this season after a stellar High School career at Colonel By High School in Ottawa. Cumberbatch was an AIA All-Star, a two year coach’s choice award winner and a school team spirit award winner. The bruising fullback is one of a talented freshmen class and will be a name to remember in the coming years. Week Two
In high school you always
imagine what it would be like to play in or to be on the sideline of a
university football game. Knowing that Coulter Field is one of the
smaller stadiums in the conference, I never expected the intensity in
the atmosphere to be so powerful. On Saturday at Coulter field, the
intensity was so thick that you could slice it with a knife. I am
positive that most of the rookies on the team would admit that they were
in awe when they saw our Gaiters jog onto the field in the majestic
purple and white. On gameday you are hit with the most vivid lesson;
that lesson being that hard work during the week will guarantee
successful results.
I was having a conversation with one of our rookie standouts
named Matt Chown one day after practice. He told me that in high school
he never left a game with two sacks, but ironically in week one at
Concordia, which is a much higher level of football, he was able to pull
off two . He accredits this to effective coaching. He explains that the
coaches knowledge pertaining to the game has helped him to recognize his
opponents tendencies a lot better. This has helped him to become a more
effective football player.
Last week, prior to the game against Sherbrooke, our
team practiced with more unity, and confidence. We were compelled by
coach Legault to practice with a sort of lust for the game while putting
the ideal of winning on a pedestal. Against Sherbrooke we displayed our
ability to take advantage our opponents' lower regard for winning. With
that mindset and active execution we defeated our opponent badly(71-0).
Even though we demolished our opponent last Saturday, the coaching
staff did not lower their standards, regarding assignments and our
willingness to compete with toughness. The greatest example of that
fact for me was Marc Loranger's (Our defensive coordinator) intensity on
the sideline. After making big plays on the defensive side of the ball,
coach Loranger was instilling the aim for perfection into us. At a time
when most coaches would be happy with the outcome on the field, Loranger
told the team where he thought we could improve.
On Saturday September 20th, we will face the Saint-
Mary's Huskies. They are the #1 team in the nation. This is a perfect
test for our team. We are predicted to be beaten severely, but if we
go into that game with winning at the highest regard, I know that our
desire to win, will carry us through the game, and force a positive
outcome.
"1,2,3", Gaiters!
