Player Diaries Week 2 Gilles Colon is the Gaiters most dangerous weapon. On the field the athletic superstar has gotten the attention of defensive coordinators everywhere, constantly receiving double teams and still managing to beat up on opposing teams. Last week against the Vert et Or Colon was rested for most of the afternoon because of a lopsided game but was effective in the short time he was on the field. Colon, from Annandale, Virginia, came to Bishop's in 1999 never having played a down of football. Today he is a star on and off the field, and this season has allowed Gaiter fans to get that much closer to the team, by providing a season diary during the 2003 campaign. Here is the second installment of what should be an interesting series. At a young age many athlete have big dreams; whether it's making a University football team, or making it to the Vanier Cup, or for some even playing professional football. As a kid I always wanted to play sports at the next level, but to be honest I wasn’t sure that my sport was going to be football. Now, at university, I am playing football, but I not able to say that I have made it to a Vanier Cup. As I am writing this diary, there is a team on its way to Lennoxville who has made it to the Vanier Cup. Not only that, but they have won two consecutive CIS Championships. The one thing that I want the most, out of my entire football career up to now, would be to beat this team – The Saint Mary’s Huskies. This past May I played in the CIS East-West All Star game. Four players from each team across the country were selected. Two of the Saint Mary’s players became my good friends throughout that week of practice; but let me be honest, those guys weren’t that special. The only thing that I saw that separated them from some of the other guys was heart. To beat the Huskies this week we need full intensity and the desire to win: we need heart. Last week we faced one of the weakest teams in the country. It was nice to get the first win of our season, but it is already forgotten. After the game, in our weekly Monday film session Coach Legault was ripping up the offense, especially myself. And I kept thinking, “man, what a mood-killer this guy is”. We just beat these guys 71-0 and I was getting chewed out for missing a block. But to be honest with you, that strict attitude is exactly what we needed. To beat the Saint Mary’s Huskies we need to play a near flawless game. We can’t make those mistakes that we made last week and expect to get away with it again. I know that I am going to be fired up, and I will try my hardest to make sure that the rest of the team is too. But what we also need is our fans. We had good fan support last week and we need the same this week. Imagine beating the two-time CIS Vanier cup winners. That is something that you don’t just want to keep to yourself, but that you have to share with your fans and everyone who loves Gaiter football as much as you do. So Saturday September 20, 1pm, Coulter Field. Be there and experience what hopefully everyone will be talking about for weeks and weeks to come and an upset that we will never forget.
Keeping it real.
