Total annihilation The Gaiters had been waiting all week to take out their frustrations after a slow start to the season against Concordia. Anyone could have walked onto Coulter Field Saturday afternoon and the Gaiters would have been primed. Unfortunately for the Sherbrooke Vert et Or, they got directions to Lennoxville and faced a Gaiter team that would not be denied retribution. The result: 71…..0. The shocking thing about that statistic is it could have been worse. The Gaiters decided to go away from their usual spread style offence to simply run the ball, put it in Andre Bynoe and Michel Wilson’s capable hands and run out the clock; starting in the first quarter. Quarterback Sylvain Desrochers had a rushing touchdown himself, but only had seven passing attempts with four completions for 136 yards and a touchdown before he was rested in the second quarter and replaced by third year quarterback Pat Nadeau.
But on the ground was
where the game was won. Three hundred and ninety six total yards rushing
for the Gaiters, minus 55 for the Vert et OR. Bynoe led the way with 17
carries for 160 net yards.
“It was a great game by our offensive line who created holes for me and Michel (Wilson) to run through,” said Bynoe after the performance. “The focus now is on the next two weeks and our two big opponents.” Defensively the Gaiters were all over the hapless Vert et Or, giving up only 46 total yards and causing six turnovers. Pierre-Olivier Proulx led the way for the team with eight tackles including 1.5 sacks and an interception returned 70 yards for a touchdown. Proulx was sympathetic towards the plight of the Gaiters young opposition. “Seriously they played the best that they can be expected to play,” said the talented middle-linebacker. “They are a very young team who is turning the ball over. We played our game and they just couldn’t handle the schemes and blitzes we were sending.” Head coach Larry Legault was pleased to come away with a win, but stayed true to form by downplaying the victory and turning his focus to the Huskies. “Even though the result was lopsided, every game prepares you for the next,” said the Gaiters head coach in his second year with the team. “But it’s as the old saying goes, that if you want to play with the big dogs, you have to get off the porch. And we have two of the biggest dogs in Eastern Canada to face in the next two weeks.” For his part, Vert et Or head coach Alain Lapointe was sombre after the affair, but chalked the loss up to the numerous turnovers and said that the team was setting individual team goals to measure their success. The Gaiters next game is at home, Saturday September 20 against the St. Mary’s Huskies. Game time is at 1:00 p.m. Stay tuned to www.ubishops.ca/gaiters for all your Football news. |
