Legault and co gear up
for season opener Last season the trip to Concordia came with mixed blessings. While the Gaiters were having difficulties with the Stingers on the field, Bishop’s Head Coach Larry Legault and his wife Sylvie were celebrating the addition of their second child, Caroline, to the fold. This season the Gaiters will make a return trip to that site, against the Stingers tomorrow (1 p.m. Loyola Campus) in a match up that has playoff implications written all over. “To win this game we have to do two things,” said
Legault Friday
Last season Jean-Michel Paquette was the story on that faithful day, the explosive runner dominating the Gaiters on special teams and out of the backfield. Paquette is back in the Stingers line-up for another season, but Legault states that you can’t alternate your game plan simply for one athlete. “Understandably, you have to give a little bit more against a team like the Stingers and a player of Paquette’s calibre,” says Legault. “But if you only focus on one player and giving it him that extra attention, you can get off your game plan. It’s a matter of our players finishing their assignments, as a team that is what we have focused on.” Before the season Legault had teased fans with the thought of having both quarterbacks Sylvain Desrochers and Pat Nadeau on the field at the same time, creating not only a host of offensive opportunities for the Gaiters but playing havoc with opposing defenses schemes. Legault was coy Friday, but revealed that at certain points tomorrow both may see the field at the same time. “Sylvain is starting,” said Legault. “And Pat is
ready to go into the game if need be and will see some time as a
receiver.” The much vaulted Stinger defence has been talked about all preseason, Stinger coach Gerry McGrath even going on the Team 990 Friday afternoon boasting about his linebacking core, calling them the best he has ever scene at the CIS level. When Legault was asked about facing such a dominant defence, he downplayed the match up. “They have two arms, two legs, just like anybody else,” said Legault. “It really doesn’t make a difference, Canadian, American, wherever they are from if you execute properly, it shouldn’t matter.” Legault added that his offence would see a balance between run and pass, with Andre Bynoe and Michel Wilson seeing the majority of carries and Gilles Colon and David Delaby being Desrochers principle targets. “We want to be diverse and that means setting up for the pass with the run and vice versa,” said Legault. “We are going to use our most athletic players and get them the ball, and right now that’s Gilles and David.” If you are in the Montreal area Saturday at 1 p.m., be sure to get to the Loyola Campus.
