Golf finishes 8th overall, Genier cracks the Top Ten

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Olivier Genier of the Golf team and Katie Montelpare of the Women’s Soccer team.

Genier led the Gaiters and finished 9th among individuals at the QSSF Golf Championship, held last weekend at the Deux-Montagnes Golf Club. Genier’s finish is the first top-20 finish for a Gaiter since Trevor Dunn finished 19th in 2005. Genier shot 78-73-73 to finish with a four-round total of 300, 14 shots behind the leaders, Clément Herviou and Benoît Gordon’s.

Golf’s season came to a close last week at the QSSF Provincial Championships in Deux Montagnes. On the team front, the Gaiters were unable to make up ground on the teams ahead of them, and remained in eighth place overall.

Individually, Olivier Genier led the Gaiters, as he shot 78-73-73 to finish with a four-round total of 300, good for a tie for 9th place, 14 strokes behind the champion, Clément Herviou of Laval. The only other Gaiter to make the cut was Alex Aubry, who finished 34th with a four-round total of 329. James Laing shot 80-82 to finish in 42nd spot, while Dane Fitzpatrick was tied for 44th and Mark Warnholtz finished 58th.

Golf idle, Provincials on tap this week

Golf was idle this week. The Gaiters are currently eighth overall in the team standings with an aggregate of 1,321. Laval leads with a score of 1,216, while Montreal is second at 1,255. ETS is third at 1,277, with McGill (1,290), UQTR (1,298), Concordia (1,299) and Sherbrooke (1,302) all ahead of Bishop’s. The Gaiters are 84 strokes ahead of ninth-place UQO (1,405).


Gaiters remain in eighth place after second weekend

The second weekend of the Golf season took place last weekend at the Le Marthelnois club in Trois-Rivières, and the Gaiters remained in eighth place despite a difficult couple of days.

After posting aggregate scores of 318 and 329 the week before, the Gaiters ballooned to 349 on Saturday, with only Olivier Genier breaking 80. On Sunday, the Gaiters rebounded to post an aggregate score of 325. The Gaiters are currently in eighth place with a four-round total of 1321, 19 strokes behind seventh-place Sherbrooke and only 31 strokes out of fourth place. Laval continues to lead with a 1219 aggregate, 39 strokes clear of second-place Montreal.


Gaiters eighth after Milby Open

Golf hosted the season-opening Milby Open last weekend, and finished the two rounds in eighth place in the QSSF standings with an aggregate score of 650. The Gaiters had a solid day on Saturday, as they were in sixth place with a score of 321, but Sunday was less kind to the home side. Laval won the weekend with an aggregate score of 587, a whopping 30 strokes ahead of second-place Montreal. The Gaiters' 650 aggregate is six strokes behind seventh-place ETS, but only 14 strokes out of fourth place, currently held by Sherbrooke.


Golf tryouts set

The 2009 Bishop's Gaiters golf team will hold its tryouts on Tuesday, September 8. The tryout will be on campus at the Old Lennoxville Golf Club, with start times at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The format will be 18 holes, stroke play.

The 2009 golf season opens on Saturday, September 12 as the Gaiters host a tournament at the Milby Golf Club.
