2007 Training Camp Diary

Game Day

Friday, September 7th

We’re coming to you live high above Lennoxville Qc from the apartment of Jordan Winnett (JO) and Mark Lawson (Lawson) located above the SAQ. The basketball team (some of whom will be mentioned throughout the article) and a few others decided to get together to watch the opening game of the football season. Since I wasn’t able to attend the first game at Concordia, I decided to do a running commentary of all of us watching the game. (More...)

Tribute

Thursday, September 6th

My grandfather died this morning.

Last week he suffered a heart-attack and stroke and had been on life support since that time. I was fortunate enough to go see him in the hospital in Elliot Lake, Ontario this past weekend. (More...)

Service with a Smile

Tuesday, September 4th / Wednesday, September 5th

As I walked on to the field on Tuesday afternoon, I came to some realizations. Firstly, there’s a game this Friday. Just like that, the games are upon us. It crept up seemingly out of nowhere. Secondly, due to EWP exams (a mandatory test dat all da students gots to take to makes right sure dat dey can writes the good English good) (More...)

Grandstanding It

Thursday, August 30th

Considering I’ve spent time with all of the positions up to this point, I thought I’d watch practice from a different perspective today. (Yes. I am fully aware that I have not spent any quality time with the kicker. But I mean, it would be kind of awkward standing next to him taking notes while he kicked by himself in the main stadium, wouldn’t it?) (More...)

Day off...for me

Wednesday, August 29th

The guys only had one practice today, and it was before noon. So obviously I didn’t go to it. Who am I Superman? (More...)

"Hey You! Give me my Quarterback!"

Tuesday, August 28th

I’m keeping it short today as the guys had a light practice this afternoon and it’s just too beautiful to focus on anything. The sun was shining. Birds were chirping. It was just a great day to watch guys beat the crap out of each other. (More...)

"D-Line, Oh so fine!"

Monday, August 27th

Today’s plan: 1) Ask around and figure out how the game went Saturday. 2) Take some notes on the D-Line. 3) Avoid getting my feet stepped on by a pair of cleats. (More...)

Keep on Creeping on

Thursday, August 23rd

On my walk over to the field today, it was raining. In most situations, I would dread being outside in this weather. But today I was excited about it because I figured it would give me a great opportunity to drop a Pacman Jones “Makin it Rain!” joke. (More...)

On the Grind

Wednesday, August 22nd

In a regular 9 to 5 job, Wednesday is hump day. Today is that day in camp. The guys just went through back-to-back two-a-days. Thankfully, Coach Blugh decided to take it easy on the hyphen key on my keyboard and gave the team the morning off. (More...)

Soldier On...Together

Tuesday, August 21st

As I approached the field this morning, equipment manager Bill Rourke pointed out my propensity to hang with the offensive side. So to counteract this inexcusable tendency, I made a concerted effort to hang with the defense today. I watched the defensive backs in the morning and the linebackers in the afternoon. Here’s what transpired. (More...)

Two-A-Day Day

Monday, August 20th

Morning Practice (9:30am)

Because of the light razzing I received yesterday which I probably mistook as peer pressure, I went to practice early in search of any type of uniform that Bill Rourke, the equipment manager, was willing to provide. He was generous enough to give me an O-Line jersey (#53) and an O-Lineman’s helmet... (More...)

Lets Hit the Field

Sunday, August 19th

It's about 8pm on Sunday night. I'm writing this from a computer outside of the Hamilton lab because it's locked and closed even though the guy I asked earlier in the day told me it would be open. Such is life. I'm a soldier. I'll persevere.

It was a helmets-only practice today. Wait. That sounds weird. They were wearing clothes... (More...)

Things Get Testy

Saturday, August 18th

Testing starts at 10am today so I left my apartment around 9:30 and Keith Godding, veteran receiver, is sitting in his car in the parking lot. He’s driving a couple other guys and offers me a ride. After some discussion, Godding, who knows I’m writing a story, says that Leroy wanted him to take some reps at defensive back this year. (More...)

Opening Thoughts

Friday, August 17th

Late Afternoon

It is 4:45 in the afternoon and I’m sitting in Hamilton computer lab on the Bishop’s campus. For some reason, I feel a little nervous. I had an idea for a story about hanging around the football team’s training camp. They, like a few other Bishop’s teams, have to come to school in late August well before classes start to begin training for their upcoming season. (More...)
