ABOUT BISHOP'S (Recruitment Information)

Bishop's. The good old days were marked by massive participation in team sports such as cricket and football. Annual matches were held by the rugby-football team against the Old Boys as early as 1873. The College team also competed with local teams from Sherbrooke and Stanstead.

There were also recreational activities such as boating on the St. Francis and the Massawippi rivers, tennis, the game of five (similar to handball) and skating.

Today, Bishop's University offers a diversified athletic program. It is divided into three categories, offering levels of competition and instruction to meet a variety of individual interests and needs.

  1. Interuniversity Athletics . Bishop's is a member of the Quebec Student Sports Federation, competing in football, men's and women's basketball, women's soccer, men's and women's rugby and men's golf. There is also a club lacrosse team which plays a league schedule versus team in Ontario, Quebec as well as exhibitions against teams from the Eastern United States, and a club women's hockey team that plays an exhibition schedule against area opposition and American club teams.
  2. Intramural Sports provide another level of competition in men's, women's and co-educational leagues as well as individual sports. These sports include badminton, ball hockey, basketball, broomball, cross-country running, touch football, golf, ice hockey, water polo, soccer, softball, squash, tennis, and volleyball.
  3. Recreational Instructional Programme offers an array of non-competitive, life-enhancing instructional activities such as aerobics, yoga, and martial arts. Two separate brochures provide details about the Fall, Winter and Spring programmes; these are available at the beginning of each session.
