Bishop’s University was named Distinguished Delegation at the National Model United Nations in New York City

Sherbrooke - 2 April, 2008

Representing the United Republic of Tanzania, Bishop’s University's delegation of 20 spent the week of March 17th to 23rd at the National Model United Nations in New York City. The delegation won Distinguished Delegation, placing the University among the top 25 delegations in attendance

The NMUN is the largest model UN in the world, with the March NMUN hosting 160 delegations, and 2200 students, from over 40 countries around the world.

Members from Bishop's delegation sat on 10 different UN and International Organization committees. Three of Bishop’s delegates were chosen to act as Rapporteurs and Chairs for three different committees – Karolyn Kirby for the Commission on the Status of Women, Jessie-Lynn Mace for ECOSOC Plenary, and Mark Lawson was chosen for the prestigious position of Vice President of the Special Court for Sierra Leone.  Ashley Grant, representing Tanzania on the Commission on the Status of Women, was named outstanding delegate

Spearheaded by Professor and liberal candidate for the Compton-Stanstead riding William Hogg, our delegates conducted in-depth research on Tanzania, learning the rules of procedure, and exploring negotiation strategies.  These were put into practice during five joint simulations with the NMUN delegation from the Université de Sherbrooke.  The Bishop’s team also took part in the Quebec Model UN in February, which was jointly hosted by Bishop’s and Sherbrooke.

The closing negotiations took place in the General Assembly and ECOSOC plenary rooms.  This gave the students the opportunity to actually work in the UN, sitting at their country’s chair, and vote using the famous coloured buttons that so many official delegates have used.
