Bishop's Bruno Lacasse honoured at the OCTAS 2008 Gala Awards

Sherbrooke QC - 17 June, 2008

On May 24, the ZAP Sherbrooke (www.zapsherbrooke.org) wireless project received top honours at the OCTAS Awards in the category Les technologies au service de la collectivité .

Boasting over 167 access points across the city, ZAP Sherbrooke President and Director of Bishop’s University’s ITS Department Bruno Lacasse, says “ZAP Sherbrooke’s goal was to make Sherbrooke one of the cities offering the highest number of free wireless internet access points to its citizens and visitors in public areas and commercial buildings. This goal has now been attained.”

Founded in June of 2007, ZAP Sherbrooke is a non profit organization whose mission is to promote free wireless internet access points in the Sherbrooke area. It now offers more access points than any other region (or city) in Canada and ranks fourth in North America.

ZAP Sherbrooke began as an initiative of the Pôle universitaire de Sherbrooke, but came to fruition through the efforts of four initial partners including the Bishop’s University’s Students’ Representative Council. “ZAP Sherbrooke now has over 25 public, community and private partners,” declares Lacasse. “Access points can be found in restaurants, garages, dentist or doctor’s offices or other public buildings.”

Organized by the FiQ (Fédération informatique du Québec), the Concours des OCTAS recognizes excellence in Quebec's information technology industry. Each year the FiQ rewards individuals, companies or organizations for their creativity, vitality and exceptional contribution to the growth of the industry.
