CALL FOR PROJECT APPLICATIONS McCONNELL STUDENT OPPORTUNITY FUND
14 October, 2008
The McConnell Student Opportunity Fund is an endowment of $250,000 created from the McConnell Family Foundation’s generous donation of $1,000,000 to Bishop’s University in support of innovation and the strategic goals of the University. In this academic year 2008-2009, the fund will provide $12,500 for student opportunities.
The purpose of the McConnell Student Opportunity Fund is to encourage projects that foster student innovation, initiative, and self-reliance, by providing students with financial support to pursue practical research and most particularly, employment-related experiences. Funds are intended to nurture the development of new experiences and/or to enhance intellectual and practical skills to complement those taught in academic programmes. Examples of student initiatives which could receive support might include academic or career opportunity forums, distinguished speakers, apprenticeship opportunities, cultural exchange, volunteer efforts – in short, any activities that nurture the development of new knowledge and aptitudes.
As described in the Fund Guidelines , applications for the McConnell Student Opportunity Fund are encouraged from both individuals and formally constituted or informal groups. Applicants must be registered full-time or part-time students of Bishop’s University and must have a minimum cumulative average of 65%. Proposed projects must normally have an expected completion date of June 30, 2009, and a final report to the McConnell Student Opportunity Fund Adjudication Committee is mandatory.
Students or student groups enrolled in the Williams School of Business are invited to make application for project support but their eligibility depends upon the availability of project support under programs funded by the SEED Foundation.
The deadline for applications is 16:30, Friday, November 28, 2008, to the Dean of Student Affairs’ Office, D222. Decisions should be available during the second week of December. Application forms and guidelines may be obtained from the Dean of Student Affairs’ Office, D222, or the Students’ Representative Council Office, or from Dr. Brad Willms at bwillms@ubishops.ca
