Canadian Film Star Paul Gross to Visit Bishop’s University

SHERBROOKE, QC - 5 January, 2009

Bishop’s University Drama Department, with the kind assistance of the Speakers Committee, is pleased to invite the public to a special evening with Canadian film star Paul Gross. Mr. Gross will be present for the screening of his new film, the World War One epic – Passchendaele – at Centennial Theatre on Thursday, January 15 at 7pm.

Mr. Gross will introduce the film with an account of his 12 year odyssey to bring the uniquely Canadian war story to the screen and a question and answer session will follow the viewing. Don’t miss this opportunity to spend an evening with one of Canada’s most important creative artists.

Paul Gross is perhaps best known as RCMP Constable Benton Fraser of the television series Due South . Gross also co-wrote and produced the series which won a wide international audience. For his role as the brilliant but tormented stage director Geoffrey Tenant in the critically acclaimed series Slings and Arrows Gross received four Gemini Awards. In 2000 Mr. Gross played Hamlet to record breaking audiences at the Stratford Festival Theatre.

His directorial debut, Men with Brooms (2002), broke Canadian box office records.

One of the most stirring and ambitious films ever made in Canada, Paul Gross’s Passchendaele recounts what may have been the most savage battle of the First World War. Participation in the Battle of Passchendaele was a pivotal moment in Canadian history that defined the nation in the eyes of the world for years to come. Yet this is not simply a story about love of country, but one of love discovered amid the strife of war. Telling of a passion that endured despite cultural upheaval, vast distance and the tragedies of the battlefield, Passchendaele is as romantic as it is proud in its approach to this legacy. In this film, Gross captures a perfect balance, investing the battle scenes with a stunning ferocity but also crafting moments of remarkable beauty.
