McConnell Student Opportunity Fund Supports Student Projects

The McConnell Student Opportunity Fund Committee adjudicated a successful 2008-2009 awards competition. The Student Opportunity Fund was able to award $14,800 this year  from a generous endowment by the McConnell Family Foundation to Bishop’s University.  The money funds innovative projects which must be proposed, organized and conducted by Bishop’s students. In the 2008-09 competition the Committee received 13 applications requesting almost $26,000 in funding. After careful deliberation and review, the Committee decided to fund seven proposals from this year’s competition. Following is a list of the awards and awardees, and their winning projects.

1. Ashlee Common, Paige Marlow and Rebecca Urban

Project: The Presidential Inauguration Seminar.
Funded: Registration fees for a week long academic seminar at the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, January 10-20, 2009, Washington, D.C.

2. Hilary Atkinson

Project: “Greece, Land of the Gods” a travel journalism project. The project dovetails with a spring-semester university course in the Classics Department taking place in Greece.
Funded: Travel and accommodations for the April-May, 2009 trip.

 3. Jessica Dollinger

Project: “Volunteer Trip to Kenya with Free the Children”.
Funded: Travel and accommodations for the trip to Kenya to help build a school and work in the community with the NGO, “Free the Children”, May, 2009.

 4. Jean Doyon

Project: “Teaching Permaculture Creatively: An Intensive Professional Permaculture Teacher Training Course”.
Funded: Tuition, registration and travel to the course, March, 2009, in High Falls, New York.

 5. Patrick Lacroix

Project: “Soviet History Review, 2008-2009”.
Funded: Printing of the Soviet History Review, 2008-2009.

 6. Marc-Antoine Morin

Project: “The Institute for European Studies”.
Funded: Travel and registration for the Inter University Summer School course in Brussels and Vienna, July, 2009.

 7. Lesley Tarasoff and Mark Rizk

Project: “Diversity and Equity Centre Grand Opening”
Funded: Hosting the grand opening of the Diversity and Equity Centre on January 30, 2009.

Congratulations are well deserved to each of the award winners and their supporters for their innovative ideas, strong initiative and diligent work. The McConnell Student Opportunity Fund is proud to support these leaders of tomorrow and wishes each of them tremendous success as they accomplish their projects. The McConnell Student Opportunity Fund will hold an awards competition again next fall, for Bishop’s students with innovative ideas and projects they would like to bring to fruition.
