UPDATE: Bishop’s Community Rallying Around Students Affected by Fires

Sherbrooke QC - 11 September, 2009

Sherbrooke QC, September 10, 2009 – Less than 24 hours after fire struck twice in Lennoxville, the outpouring of support from students, alumni, staff, parents and various local organizations has been exceptional. Every effort is being made to provide the support that the students affected by the fires need.

  • 23 Bishop’s students have been displaced by the two fires; six in the College Street fire and 17 from Speid Street. There are no major injuries to report.
  • The two buildings have been released back to the owners; the Speid Street apartments are a total loss.
  • Impacted students attended a meeting with officials from Bishop’s, the Red Cross, the Borough of Lennoxville, Sherbrooke and Champlain College at 9:00 am this morning.
  • Bishop’s health and counselling services and its Chaplain remain available to assist students.
  • Each student was offered a $120 voucher for Zellers or Walmart and three days of food and lodging from the Red Cross; meal cards for Dewhurst Dining Hall, temporary residence rooms and emergency loans of $200 are being provided by the University.
  • Eight of the 23 students are currently living in Paterson Hall Residence, with the remainder staying with friends. There are rooms available in residence for all those affected should they wish to stay on campus.
  • The University will provide transportation to Carrefour de l’Estrie / Walmart tomorrow morning.
  • A student-led fundraising appeal began on campus at 10 am. Over $1000 has been raised on campus from student initiatives, and will continue through a number of events at the Gait and throughout campus.
  • Financial donations continue to be received from alumni, parents and friends of Bishop’s. To make a tax deductible gift call 819-822-9660 to speak with Jill Fletcher, or visit the online donation page at https://secure.ubishops.ca/alumnidonation/donation.aspx.  Indicate Fire Relief Fund in the designation box.
  • Financial support is the pressing priority, however some individuals have dropped off clothing, linens and small kitchen items. These will be accepted at the University Advancement Office, Campus Security, and the SRC Office (Annis Karpenko). If you wish to donate larger items (furniture) please contact Jill Fletcher at 819-822-9660 or jfletche@ubishops.ca. A list will be prepared and the students will be put in contact with donors based on need for the items.

The University is grateful for the support shown to our students from the many individuals on our campus and beyond. Special thanks to the Police and Fire Services from the city of Sherbrooke, the Red Cross, and the Borough of Lennoxville.
