Bishop’s Ranks Highly in The Globe’s Canadian University Report
25 October, 2010
Yesterday, The Globe and Mail published its Canadian University Report. Unlike the Maclean’s magazine rankings (due out in November), The Globe’s report is based on assessments by students of their experiences.
In 2009 Bishop’s students gave us very high grades in both the Globe and Mail Report and the highly-regarded National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). They have done so again this year. Of the 17 criteria on which universities are graded, Bishop’s finished with the highest rank in our category (enrolment under 4,000) in seven of them:
- Most satisfied students
- Student-faculty interaction
- Quality of teaching
- Class size
- Campus technology
- Campus atmosphere
- Satisfaction with town/city
The Report added new questions this year designed to determine what students think about various aspects of their institution’s “personality”. On the question “Academically, is your university nurturing and supportive?”, Bishop’s ranks first out of all Canadian universities, a fact highlighted in the article prefacing the results, written by Alex Usher, President of the Higher Education Strategy Association: “If you are looking for an institution which students describe as being nurturing and supportive of students, then go no further than Bishop’s University, which came tops in this category.”
This reinforces the findings from the NSSE survey which asked senior students “If you could start over, would you go to the institution you are now attending?”, again Bishop’s came first in Canada for all universities.
The Bishop’s community is proud of these results, and we will continue to work on the areas in which we did not receive the highest grades.
The complete report is available on The Globe’s website.
