Kargo Light Electric Utility Vehicle Will Help Reduce Bishop’s Carbon Footprint

9 September, 2010

Sherbrooke, QC – Bishop’s University has purchased a Kargo Light Electric Utility Vehicle to help perform maintenance and custodial work on its campus. The electric vehicle joined the University’s fleet on September 7, just in time for the return of students to campus.

The Canadian-built Kargo Light aluminum electric truck is a high technology, environmentally friendly vehicle designed and manufactured by Précicad in Québec. It can carry 1,000 lbs and two passengers, and has a 48-volt motor with a range of 40km per charge.  The Kargo Light will replace a gas-powered vehicle, further contributing to the University’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The purchase of this electric vehicle reaffirms our commitment to sustainable practices that embrace innovative, environmentally responsible technological standards,” said Bishop’s University Principal Michael Goldbloom, “It is another step in our plan to achieve environmental sustainability and reduce our carbon footprint.”

This investment in an electric utility vehicle complements Bishop’s recent efforts to lower its impact on the environment, such as the ongoing conversion of its heating system to geothermal energy, and its commitment to obtaining LEED certification for its new sports and wellness centre.

Also part of the University’s environmental sustainability strategy is the hiring of committed student interns to help integrate environmental awareness into the University’s daily operating practices. Fourth year Bishop’s student Adam Bond was a Sustainable Development Intern this summer and was involved in various initiatives at the University ranging from work on the Sierra Youth Coalition’s Sustainable  Campus Certification to the creation of a Sustainable Development Office.

“Working as Bishop’s sustainable development intern has been a fantastic experience,” said Bond, “I’ve had the opportunity to work with University management and faculty to find new ways to lessen Bishop’s impact on the environment. It’s been a tremendous learning experience.”
