Bishop’s Receives Top Marks From Students
Sherbrooke QC - 22 February, 2010
Last week Maclean’s magazine published the results of the National Survey on Student Engagement (NSSE). This annual survey gives current students across Canada a chance to grade their university, and give prospective students an opportunity to compare how well schools deliver.
The survey focused on five key areas that have been shown to lead to improved learning and greater student success. Bishop’s fared remarkably well, placing in the top 6 (out of 56 Canadian universities) in each of the five benchmark areas:
Supportive Campus Environment: Bishop’s ranked 1st
Student-Faculty Interaction: Bishop’s ranked 2nd
Active and Collaborative Learning: Bishop’s ranked 2nd
Level of Academic Challenge: Bishop’s ranked 6th
Enriching Educational Experience: Bishop’s ranked 6th
Together, these five benchmarks provide direct feedback from students as to the quality of education at their university, both in the classroom and beyond. The survey’s results affirm the value of the Bishop’s model of undergraduate education.
“Bishop’s offers an intimate, supportive environment in which to learn and grow,” said Principal Michael Goldbloom. “Students have the opportunity to pursue their passions, build leadership skills and develop the values that will form the foundation of successful careers and good citizenship.”
The survey also asked students to reflect on their overall satisfaction with their education through responses to two questions. When asked:
How would you evaluate your entire educational experience at this institution?
Student responses ranked Bishop’s 2nd in Canada among senior students and 4th among first year students.
If you could start over, would you go to the institution you are now attending?
Bishop’s ranked 1st among senior students and 3rd among first year students.
About The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE): NSSE asks students at hundreds of colleges and universities across North America to reflect on the time they devote to various learning activities. The topics explored are linked by previous research on student success in college.
