New Publications by Bishop's Faculty Members

Sherbrooke QC - 28 January, 2008

Bishop's congratulates Dr. Jacqui Reid-Walsh, Dr. Patrick Dramé, as well as Dr. Jean Levasseur, who have all had books published this month.

Girl Culture, a two-volume book co-published by Dr. Reid-Walsh, a professor from the English department, overviews the complex issues faced by young girls today. Containing over 250 in-depth entries covering the twenty and twenty-first century trendsetters, fashion, literature, film, in-group rituals and hot-button issues that shape, and are shaped by, girl culture, Girl Culture also offers information on how to better understand the ongoing interplay between girls and mainstream culture.

L’impérialisme colonial français en Afrique. Enjeux et impacts de la défense de l’AOF (1918-1940), published by Dr. Dramé, a professor from the department of history,is a study based on Dramé's doctoral dissertation defended at Université Paris IV-Sorbonne, for which he received, in 2005, the Prix d’histoire militaire of the French ministry of defense. Based on original archival material, the book demonstrates how difficult it was for the French colonizers to impose their law and directions in Western Africa.

Aux chevaliers du noeud coulant, published by Dr. Levasseur, a professor in the Département d'études françaises et québécoises, is a critical edition of poems and songs written by Rémi Tremblay, including texts that are representative of the political, social, and cultural context of the late 19th century. Tremblay was a journalist of great repute who published thousands of articles and contributed to all the important periodicals and magazines of Quebec and New England in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Often arrogant in his published views, and sure of his entitlements, he burnt many bridges with figures on both sides of the political scene.
