Bishop's Honoured at 27th Mérite Sportif Gala Award
LENNOXVILLE - 7 February, 2008
The Bishop's University Athletic Department is pleased to recognize its two award winners from the 27th Annual Mérite Sportif de l'Estrie regional sports awards gala held last night in Sherbrooke. David Guay, an assistant coach for the Gaiters' Men's Basketball Team was named Volunteer Coach of the Year, and the 2007 National Men's Basketball Championship was named Sport Event of the Year.
Guay is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Gaiters. He is a teacher at the Séminaire de Sherbrooke, and is also the coach of the Séminaire's Juvenile AA basketball team. He was named QSSF Male Secondary Coach of the Year in 2007, as his Barons won a silver medal at the 2007 QSSF secondary school Juvenile AA championships. He becomes the first Gaiter coach to win the Volunteer Coach award, and his win is the first for Bishop's since current Men's Basketball coach Eddie Pomykala was named Paid Coach of the Year in 1998.
The 2007 Canadian Men's National Basketball Championship, which was hosted at Bishop's University (as well as the Cégep de Sherbrooke and the Séminaire de Sherbrooke) in August 2007, was named Sports Event of the Year. This is the second consecutive win for the National Basketball Championships, as this win follows on the heels of the victory in 2006 for the National Women's Basketball Championship.
