Produced by the Foreman Art Gallery of Bishop's University
Above and Below explores the foundations of the
museum using the contemporary curated exhibition as analogy for
the 16th century Kunstkammer or wonder-room, regarded as
a microcosm of the world and importantly, as a memory theater.
In today’s post-colonial context we experience a simultaneous
expansion via globalization, and contraction in terms of ethics
and political positioning vis-à-vis the world. In this optic,
contemporary sculpture, drawing and video by Canadian and
international artists on themes related to the collection,
curiosity, and scale is presented in a creative mise-en-scène
that returns the exhibition to its theatrical roots and asks if
the museum can play a role in the way we experience the world
today.
